F.A.Q. / Wood Floors

Floor Refinishing

1.Is my wood flooring too poor condition to restore?

With professional treatment by Barfords, your wood floor will be transformed. At consultation we will discuss the options available. We have a range of ‘before and after’ wood sample boards, to give an indication of the finished result. If your wooden flooring needs replacing, we can show stock new wood floor samples or source the many alternatives available.

2. My wood floor is damaged and the fireplace area is filled with cement.

After a survey Barfords are able to source most oak, pine or mahogany flooring or make bespoke wood sections to fit. These will be securely fixed in place and french  polished to match the surrounding area.

3. Is there much dust?

During the floor sanding operation there’s minimal dust by using the best machines and by constantly vacuuming. We use polythene sheeting to prevent dust being blown into other areas

4. I have gaps between the Floorboards

Gaps can be filled and at Barfords we use three methods. For smaller gaps, we use the existing fine sawdust from your wood floor mixed with resin. For larger spaces wooden shivers, cut to size are glued in and when sanded flat, will permanently fill any gaps. To keep the look of gaps but fill completely we use a flexible plastic strip fitted at the base of the gap.

5. What about staining the wood?

If required, we can stain all woodwork, to personal choice. Traditional methods are used; our favourite stain is made from charcoaled walnut shells!! This gives wood a natural deep brown  feel

As all clients and wood floors are individual, we mix stains for each commission.

6. How long before my wood floor can be used?

We use Swedish Waterborne lacquers to seal the wood floor, it is extremely durable and has very little odour during application. Generally the wood floor can have light foot traffic 2 hours from completion, but preferably overnight is best.

7. Whats the difference between oiled and lacquer finishes ?

An oiled finish gives a deep natural colour taking overnight to dry between coats. Its easier to repair but requires coating more frequently. A lacquered finish is more durable, and dries to a lighter colour, almost to the colour after sanding. Dries within two hours for light foot traffic and is odour free

8. What about maintenance?

Simply vacuum or use a soft brush as necessary and a periodic clean with a moist mop is sufficient. We can supply a maintenance kit if wanted. Floors mainly wear through grit between feet and the floor, this acts like sandpaper so quality entrance matting is recommended or to have an inset mat fitted, please ask Alan for further details.

9. Does furniture have to be moved out?

Unless it is fitted, in most cases, it is far better if the room is completely clear. Furniture can be replaced 24 hours after completion, but leave rugs out for an extra day. While the furniture is out we recommend that suitable felt pads are applied to the feet, we are able to supply these in various sizes.

10. How much will the work cost?

This depends on room/area size and of course your requirements. Prices average from £19 to £38 + VAT

To lay a floor there are many variables and a survey will probably be required.

11. What’s next?
